Standard screws pull out. Drywall screws do not. That is the primary difference you need to understand before you start hanging sheets. Regular wood screws have shallow threads that strip easily under the shear force of heavy drywall panels. Drywall screws feature deeper, sharper threads designed to bite into the material and hold fast without backing out. They are made of hardened steel and require a power screwdriver to drive them in efficiently.
Choosing the wrong screw leads to popped heads, sagging walls, and hours of remedial work. The process starts with knowing what you are attaching the drywall to.
S-Type vs. W-Type Screws
The two main categories of drywall screws are defined by the stud material they secure to. Using the wrong type compromises the entire installation.
S-Type Screws for Metal Studs
S-type screws are engineered for metal framing. They have a sharper point and thinner shanks. This design allows them to penetrate thin-gauge steel studs without pre-drilling, provided the screw is long enough. The goal is to drive the screw deep enough to grip the metal securely but not so deep that you puncture the drywall on the other side.
W-Type Screws for Wood Studs
W-type screws are thicker and designed for wood. They are slightly longer and have a coarser thread profile. These screws are built to handle the density of wood framing. The depth of penetration matters more here than the head style.
Measuring Penetration Depth
Depth is non-negotiable. If the screw is too short, it holds nothing. If it is too long, you risk breaking through the drywall face.
For W-type screws in wood, the rule is simple. Drive the screw so it penetrates the wood stud by at least 0.63 inches (1.6 cm). This ensures the threads engage fully with the wood grain.
For S-type screws in metal, the requirement is less. You need a penetration depth of at least 0.38 inches (0.9 cm) into the metal stud. Metal is thin; over-drilling destroys the grip.
What if you are hanging drywall over existing layers? The math changes. You must account for the thickness of the old wall. In multi-layer applications, ensure the screw penetrates the second layer (the new drywall) by at least 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) after passing through the first. This prevents the screw from merely skimming the surface of the new sheet.
Coarse vs. Fine Threads
The thread pitch determines how the screw behaves during installation.
Coarse Threads
Coarse threads are aggressive. They remove material as they go, which allows for faster insertion. Fewer threads mean less friction against the drywall paper surface. This type offers a tighter hold once seated. Use coarse-thread screws when attaching drywall to softwood studs. The wood is dense enough to support the aggressive bite without splitting.
Fine Threads
Fine threads are precise. They take longer to drive because there is more surface area engaging the material. However, they often have sharper points that make initial insertion easier, especially in hard-to-reach corners. Fine-thread screws are ideal for light metal studs. The finer pitch distributes the load better across the thin metal flange, reducing the risk of stripping the hole.
Specialty Options and Safety
Not all jobs fit the standard template. Sometimes you need tools that work harder so you don’t have to.
Self-Drilling Screws
If you are working with heavy or thick metal studs, pre-drilling is a waste of time. Self-drilling drywall screws have a drill-bit tip. They cut their own pilot hole as they drive in. This eliminates the need for a separate drill bit and speeds up the process significantly.
Corrosion-Resistant Coatings
Moisture kills drywall jobs. In bathrooms, kitchens, or humid climates, standard steel screws will rust. Rust stains bleed through the joint compound, ruining the paint job. Look for screws with corrosion-resistant coatings. These are often zinc-plated or coated with specialized polymers to prevent oxidation.
Installation Tips
Drywall screws require torque. A manual screwdriver will strip the head in seconds. Use a cordless drill or impact driver set to a clutch setting. If the torque is too high, you will break the paper face of the drywall. If it is too low, the screw sits proud of the surface.
The head should sit slightly below the surface of the drywall without tearing the paper. This is called “dimpling.” Do not break the paper. If the paper tears, the screw has no anchor. Pull the screw out, fill the hole, and try again with a fresh screw.
Plastic anchors are not part of the primary attachment. They are used later when hanging objects on the finished wall. Do not confuse drywall screws with the screws used for anchors. The drywall screw holds the sheet to the stud. The anchor holds the picture frame to the sheet.
