Most people treat their garage like an outdoor shed with a roof. It’s not. It’s part of the house.
When you ignore the garage, you invite the elements in. In winter, it inhales freezing air. In summer, it traps superheated heat. That temperature imbalance doesn’t stay in the garage. It bleeds through the walls and ceiling into your living space. Your HVAC system works harder. Your carbon footprint grows. Your bills go up.
You can fix this. It doesn’t require a full remodel. Just a few targeted upgrades. Here is how to seal the leaks and insulate the shell.
Seal the gap between walls and concrete floor
Cost: ~$5 for caulk
Garages move. The framing shifts. The concrete settles. Over time, the connection between the bottom of the wall framing and the concrete slab cracks open. Air leaks in.
Don’t ignore the perimeter. It’s often overlooked.
Grab a tube of latex or silicone-based caulk. Or use foam sealant if the gap is wider. Run a bead along the entire junction where the wall meets the floor. It stops the draft. It’s cheap. It works.
Insulate the interior walls
Cost: $1,000+ for a standard two-car garage
Many older homes—and some new builds—skip insulation in the garage walls. You might just have siding, sheathing, and particle board. That’s not enough.
You need thermal resistance.
Roll insulation with the proper R-value between the joists. If you have drywall already, you can blow insulation in through a small hole. It fills the cavities. It stops the heat transfer.
This is a bigger job. But it’s the backbone of an efficient garage.
Weatherstrip the interior door
Cost: $10+ for weatherstripping
The door between your garage and your house is a critical barrier. If it leaks, your garage becomes a direct pipe to your living room.
Check the frame. Is the weatherstripping intact? Is it pliable? If it’s brittle, replace it.
Here’s a quick test. Turn on the garage lights. Turn off the lights inside the house. Close the door. If you see light coming through the cracks in the dark room, you have a problem.
Check the threshold too. Air sneaks under the door. A simple draft stopper works if you don’t want to replace the whole threshold. Finally, caulk the trim around the door frame on both sides. Air travels through the inner construction if the decorative trim isn’t sealed.
Insulate the garage door
Cost: $50–$1,000
An uninsulated garage door is basically a thin sheet of aluminum. Aluminum conducts heat. It conducts cold. It does one thing: transfer temperature from outside to inside.
If your walls are insulated but the door is not, you wasted half your effort.
You can buy a new insulated door. It costs several hundred dollars. Or you can DIY it. Buy an insulation kit. These usually feature double-bubble radiant insulation. Stick it to the inside of the door. It reflects heat away in summer. It holds heat in during winter. Foam board works too.
Seal outlets and light switches
Cost: $5 for foam gaskets
Small cracks matter.
Air moves through the smallest gaps. But there’s a bigger risk than drafts. Carbon monoxide.
When you drive into the garage, fumes linger. Those gases can seep through wall cavities. They can enter your home through unsealed electrical boxes.
Buy specialized foam gaskets for your outlets and switches. Slide them behind the cover plates. It takes five minutes. It stops the air. It stops the fumes.
Add passive solar heating
Cost: $50+ for materials
Running a gas or electric heater in a garage is expensive. It’s carbon-intensive.
There’s a free alternative: the sun.
Build a passive solar heater. It’s a DIY project. You need basic hand tools and some craft experience. The unit captures solar heat and releases it into the space. It’s warm. It’s efficient. It doesn’t cost you anything to run once it’s built.
Seal cracks in the concrete floor
Cost: ~$5 for concrete sealant
Concrete isn’t insulation. But cracked concrete is worse than nothing.
Cold air rises from the ground through cracks. So do gases. Water enters too. When snow melts on your car and drips into those cracks, it freezes. Ice expands. It lifts the slab.
If the slab shifts, the floor becomes uneven. An uneven floor means the garage door won’t seal properly. You’re back to square one.
Seal the cracks. Use a concrete sealant. Keep the slab stable. Keep the door sealed.
Your garage doesn’t have to be the coldest room in the house. It doesn’t have to be the hottest.
Start with the cheap fixes. Caulk the floors. Seal the switches. Then move to the walls and door.
