It looks like concrete. It has everything to say about the brown crust that form after the bases of tomatoes and zucchini are spread generously around coffee groundss. The water in the hose beaded up and slid off the surface. It doesn’t absorb. At the same time, the leaves also turn yellow.
There were no nutritional deficiencies. There are no fungal diseases. Just a few centimeters away from a completely inaccessible water source, the roots die of thirst.
Every spring, thousands of French gardeners face this nightmare. Coffee groundss attract attention as a very environmentally friendly product. Magical. Free. But the reality on the grounds is less romantic.
Acidification Myth
The first misconception to dispel is simple. The idea that coffee groundss do not significantly acidify the soil.

Hydrophobic Crust
As a mulch, the coffee groundss compact quickly. This compaction forms a shell that becomes hydrophobic as it dries. Water beads up, reducing permeability and stressing young roots. This is the exact mechanism by which plants “die of thirst” despite regular watering.

Their experiments showed that even limited amounts of quantities of groundss in the soil can have a negative effect on the growth of broccoli, leeks, radishes, violets and sunflowers. Their conclusion is that all garden plants respond poorly to applied coffee groundss, regardless of soil type or added fertilizer.
How to use coffee groundss without killing your plants
Everything changes when it goes through the compost bin. The composting process turns potentially aggressive quantities of groundss into stable amendment. Microorganisms break down the still active molecules to make nitrogen available, reducing the risk of phytotoxicity and providing a more even supply of nutrients.
Compost piles must not contain more than 20% coffee by volume. Otherwise, there is a risk that it will become toxic to plants. This is the golden rule established by the Oregon State University Extension and is the worldwide standard for the use of garden coffee groundss. A third of the volume in groundss is too much. During composting, alternately mix 3 parts leaves, 1 part fresh grass and 1 part grounds. This ratio maintains the balance of carbon and nitrogen and prevents the formation of dense clumps that can lead to poor fermentation.
If applying directly to the soil without composting, integrate about one centimeter of grounds to the top 10 cm. Do not leave the top layer too thick. Slow-release nutrients are important
